Where the canopy breaks

This A3-sized alcohol ink painting on Yupo paper is a sweeping, circular journey through colour and motion — a radiant fusion of natural energy and abstract storytelling.

On the left, rich carmine and crimson tones form a dense core evocative of bark. This central mass is wrapped in vibrant, molten yellows and peaches, edged with earthy browns and hints of violet. These colours swirl outward, layered like the rings of a tree — each band telling its own quiet story of time and transformation.

To the right, cool washes of denim blue ripple across the canvas in gentle, arching strokes. These waves create a sense of openness and motion, like wind moving through forest canopies. The composition radiates from left to right, as if we’re being pulled from something deep and rooted toward something vast and skybound.

There is a tension here — between groundedness and release, fire and calm — suggesting both the interior of a woodland and the  arc of a greater journey.

Van Gogh is quoted as saying "If you truly love nature you will find beauty everywhere".

Autumn is my favourite season and I hope this series of paintings entitled "Into the Woods" capture my love of it.  It's a time of spectacular colour changes: bold and soft golds, greens, oranges and reds transform the colour palette of the outdoors, before dropping gently into rest.  This time of year fills the air with a feeling of change as leaves fall gracefully from the branches and come to setlle softly on the ground.  Trees start to reveal their superb architecture previoulsy hidden by foliage.  There is a magic as everything is changing.  A time not just of change but of letting go.
