Rocks 10

Rocks 10

This A3 alcohol ink painting captures the striking geology of the rocks at West Bay, Dorset. Created using a palette of denim blue and slate, the work evokes the powerful presence of the Jurassic Coast with a fluid, dreamlike elegance.

On the left, the weathered rock face emerges in smoky layers of slate grey, its vertical lines echoing the natural erosion and striations that define the rocks. The ink forms soft veils and organic textures that suggest centuries of wind and water carving through stone.

To the right, the vast expanse of the sea stretches into the distance, rendered in calming tones of denim blue. Gentle horizontal brushstrokes lend the water a sense of motion and depth, while the horizon blends subtly into a pale, creamy sky—inviting a feeling of calm after storm or tide.

The interplay of vertical rock formations with the horizontal lines of sea and sky gives the piece a balanced, contemplative energy. A portrait of place and time, it celebrates the enduring beauty of Dorset’s coast, shaped by nature’s patient hand.
